How To Prevent Diabetic Neuropathy In Feet
One of the most common types of foot problems that diabetic have to contend with is foot neuropathy in the feet. Once you develop this complication life does become more complicated. Constant checking of the feet for wounds that you don't feel is very important and treating them right away becomes vital to staying active and living a higher quality of life.
The main reason why diabetic foot neuropathy is so difficult to deal with is because the people with elevated blood sugar levels are slowly inflicting harm on their nerve endings. When the damage stacks up enough the nerve endings slowly stop sensing things which normal nerve endings do. This may not sound very serious but think of this: when was the last time you felt a blister forming? Did you stop to adjust your shoe or sock? Maybe you stopped whatever activity you were doing because you were injuring your feet. Now imagine that you didn't feel that blister forming; you probably would keep on walking on it until it got worse… probably until it got so bad that it required special care.
Preventing neuropathy in the feet is something that is very important. Every diabetic should be considered with managing their diabetes better. Maintaining normal blood sugar levels is important in staying healthy in the short term. As any diabetic knows a spike in blood sugar can be deadly if it is bad enough. What diabetics need to understand however is that limiting spikes is not enough. Chronically high blood sugar slowly damages the body and can lead to things like neuropathy down the road which can also limit your ability to live a long and fulfilling life.
To prevent diabetic neuropathy in feet you have to manage your blood sugar levels better and you have to stay as active as possible. This means you need to be wearing good diabetic shoes and socks and you have to be protecting your feet in the home with diabetic slippers or house shoes. Staying active is the most important part of the entire process. Increased activity levels help improve insulin sensitivity and can help protect you against blood sugar spikes. Nothing you do will guarantee that you prevent diabetic foot neuropathy but you can take these steps to minimize the risks.
