Natural Link Building – Does it Exist?
You will hear it repeated time and time again. Google wants you to get natural links to your website. In my opinion, there is no such thing as 100 percent natural links. The very act of creating a link is unnatural. It has to be done manually. The only link which would be completely natural would be a link that creates itself. I'm sorry, but the web isn't an artificial intelligence capable of doing that.
Natural Linking Concepts
Allyn Hane, master of his own domain at Blogger Illustrated, wrote an interesting article accompanied by a video blog about his ideas on natural linking, titled "Natural Links And Online Friends Help Us Get By!". In the video, he explains how he would naturally want to link to his online friends. This is only part of the picture.
When I want to link to other sites, I want to link to articles, pictures, videos or whatever else you can think of when they're relevant to the articles I'm writing. The last thing I want is for the link to be created automatically. I want full control over where I link to and the kind of link it's going to be. This is the reason I designed ConnectContent, made it work, and then turned it over to someone else to administer. The very purpose of that site is to make sure people can find relevant links without searching forever and a day.
No Blog is an Island
Have you even been to a website where there are no links pointing to any other sites at all? I have and there are many sites like that. If linking to other sites is natural, you would see at least ONE link on a site like that.
If you've been to one of these "island" blogs, have you noticed how poorly they rank and how little traffic they get? Google rewards you for linking out to relevant sites as much as Google rewards you for getting links to your own site. Well, almost as much.
The worldwide web was built on the concept of linking to relevant resources. If you fail to link to anyone then you're nothing more than an island in a vast ocean of information.
In the sense of how the web is designed, linking to relevant sites is the only thing that's 100 percent natural, as long as you don't overdo it. Linking to irrelevant sites and resources is unnatural and should be avoided as much as possible. The "nofollow" attribute was designed to help us avoid getting penalized for unnatural links. Use it with care.

Hmmm this got me to thinking. Even though I have been reading yours and Grizz's work for about 3 months somehow this idea hasn't struck home yet.
There are some people and sites that I think I'll be linking to if just to say thanks for great information. I think links are def the money of the internet and kicking people down a little link love is the least people can do.
thanks

Utopia would be natural links. And everyone finding you without you having to do anything would also be utopia.
The fact is people hang out on different sites and you need to be where they are.
Build up authority at those various places and then use that authority to help out other sites (yours and other people you like).
That is what I'm finally starting to get.
Thanks to RT and Grizz.
