How to Begin with Digital Photography

If you are interested in doing a bit of photography you might be a little unsure of whether you really want a digital camera or not. Although there are still photography aficionados who swear by film photography, most people are now enjoying the benefits of digital.

To begin with, digital cameras were really quite expensive and not all that good. Things have changed a lot since then and you can now buy a very good digi camera at a bargain price. Even if you want to buy a digital SLR, you'll find one at a price you can afford.

Of course, if you want a digital camera that's going to last you for a good few years, you should spend the money to get something very good. There's no point in spending $20 only to find it doesn't give you what you want.

When it comes to making your purchase, there's more than just the appearance to think about. First of all, there's the number of mega pixels, zoom functions, size of the LCD screen along with how long the battery lasts.

It's certainly worth taking a bit of time to decide what your needs are. If you only want to take photos of your family whilst on vacation then you don't need anything fancy. However if you are looking to be professional or semi-professional then you should look for something with more features.

Just be careful you don't allow the salesperson to convince you that you need a more expensive camera than you truly need. To do this you should arm yourself with the jargon that they use and understand what it all means. Some people end up spending so much on a camera and all the accessories that go along with it, that they end up needing camera financing.

Of course, a camera is nothing unless you know how to use it. In the right hands, a cheap camera can produce amazing results whilst in the wrong hands the most expensive camera can produce rubbish results. So it pays to learn how to use your camera properly. This might involve going to evening classes or buying a book on the subject.

Some people think it's OK to take bad pictures because you can just go onto the computer and edit them to make them look fantastic. This might be possible for those who are really great at using photo editing suites, however for the average person, it's better to understand what settings to use, lighting, focusing, shutter speed and such like.

So how a beginner approaches the arena of digital photography really depends on what you are looking to achieve and what kind of experience you have with traditional cameras.
