5 Tips to Avoid being a Victim of Thieves while on Shopping Holidays
It is easy to get caught up in the fun of having a holiday and forgetting about keeping yourself safe. Having a safe accommodation is key to enjoying your holiday. If you don't feel your room is safe, or your safety deposit box is not good enough to leave your belongings in, then you are already off to a pretty bad start. Staying safe and taking care is something that you get better at with time. You should also remember that it is obvious to the local people you are a tourist and that will make you a target. Here is a guide to keeping out of trouble or being a victim of a crime when you are on holiday.
- Looking Around. The main giveaway that someone is a tourist is the fact they will look upwards at the buildings as they walk down a street. This is something you should take care of. Sure you want to look at the architecture, but you don't need to be looking around as you walk down ever street. Always check the distance between you and any other pedestrians. Be wary of anyone randomly talking to you. Many pickpockets work in groups. Pick pocketing will happen in busy places, and you cannot always tell what kind of people will be the ones attempting to stealing your belongings. Anyone is a potential thief.
- Important Belongings. All decent hotels will have programmable safety boxes. This is something you should check at the time of booking. Any other devices are just not good enough. You should avoid carrying as many of your valuables as possible. Carrying smaller amounts of cash is always recommended. Flash-kidnapping is becoming more of a problem in many countries. This is where someone is taken to an ATM and forced to withdraw money from their account. Keeping your credit/debit cards well hidden on your body is of utmost importance. Small amounts of money can be kept and this money can be handed over if someone attempts to harass you on a street.
- Read Up. There is a wealth of information available on the internet from other travellers. Certain places will have certain scams. For example, in South America, spilling tomato sauce on you when you are sitting in an outdoor café is a common trick. A couple of people will come to your aid, and steal your belongings as you do so.
- Mobile Phones. Mobile phones are always a huge target for thieves because they can be sold so fast on the black market. Using a mobile phone band to tie your phone to your belt is always a great option. Use a fastener that is of a dark colour otherwise you will be attracting more attention.
- Bum Bags. It is easy to think it is safe to be wearing a bum bag when on holidays. The problem with them, and any other bag is they are a huge target for would be thieves. It is always better to have your important items in your front pockets. Avoid using any bags where possible.
Walking around the local markets and having a relaxing day looking and buying those items you just cannot get at home can be a wonderful way to spend a day or two when on holidays. Lower your risk of being a victim as you mingle in the crowds with these tips and add a small amount of sensibility.
